What is the best mattress for me?
For many people, the struggle of attaining a good rest at night is all too real. The answer to all of our insomnia driven fears may be hiding not too far from here.
For a lot of people, the key to being able to sleep well at night is in the mattress. With so many to choose from on today’s market, it can sometimes be an unbearable task trying to understand what is on offer and what would actually be the most suitable mattress.
Ultimately, buying the incorrect type of mattress will only see us falling right back to square one.
There are three main categories that a mattress will fall into – firm, medium and soft mattresses. The first question to resolve is which of these types suit you specifically. Although a soft mattress may sound and appear to be the most comfortable, it shouldn’t be assumed that it is desirable for everybody.
By the same token, a firm mattress may seem to be the least appealing of the three but suitability really does depend on the sleeper. The position in which you sleep at night may determine which mattress is best. If you tend to sleep on your back or stomach then perhaps you should consider a firm or medium firm mattress.
Slimmer people may find that a bed with a firmer mattress is a better suit. A medium or soft mattress may be of more benefit if you like to sleep on your side. People who are of a bigger build should consider a softer mattress when deciding on their next place to sleep.
Pocket Sprung Mattress
The differences don’t stop there though. Mattresses are divided into four further different categories.
Pocket sprung mattresses have springs which are contained within sewn pockets. They do not conform to the shape of the body and tend not to be as warm as other options but this doesn’t render them any less comfortable.
The number of springs held within the mattress may vary greatly. As a general rule of thumb, the more pocket springs, the comfier the mattress shall be. This isn’t a fact strictly adhered to however.
Smaller mattresses just simply don’t have as much room for springs as a king size does and spring count can depend significantly on the area allowed.
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses
adapt to body shape which makes the mattress warmer and perhaps a more viable choice if you tend to get chilly at night.
These mattresses have a layer of temperature sensitive fabric to enable this to happen. They tend to be softer and support the whole body which can only lead to comfort.
The more traditional and cheaper of mattresses is the continuous or open coil variety. Continuous coil mattresses have just one looped wire making up the interior springs. Open coil mattresses have many single springs held together by one wire.
As all springs are intertwined, the mattress moves together as a unit.
are not as popular as the other kinds of mattress. They comprise of layers of spring like latex and are claimed to be more resistant against the wear and tear brought on by everyday use.
Similar to memory foam, latex is soft and allows support for the whole body and also boast being hypoallergenic. This means that growth of bacteria and dust is limited. An added advantage for those with breathing problems such as asthma.
In a lot of cases, there is more than just one person to consider when it comes to buying a mattress. It’s all well and good deciding which mattress is most suited to yourself but what about you partner?
Can you both be suited to the same type of mattress? Ideally, yes, but this cannot be promised. Every person is unique as far as sleeping is concerned. In that case, what compromises can be made? Both memory foam and latex will enable both bodies to be catered to specifically but lack the firmness that is provided by the pocket sprung mattress that may be required for one of the people involved.
