The Sloane & Sons Twickenham is super comfortable. But did you also realise that it’s one of the most significant investments you can make in your health?

Barely a week passes without further proof that good sleep is essential to good health. Scientific studies have produced strong evidence that poor sleep contributes to a range of illnesses. The NHS has recently updated its “Choices” web site with advice that poor sleep can cause heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and shorten our lives. And high among the causes of poor sleep, the NHS specifically lists a bad mattress. Read on to find out why high quality new bedding could be as important as exercise when it comes to good sleep and improved health.

Details

Memory foam as it is known to the general public was originally known as visco-elastic, Sloane & Sons Twickenham mattress gently supports those areas of our musculo-skeletal system that take the majority of the wear and tear of daily life. Knees, ankles, hips, and shoulders don’t sink into ordinary bedding – they sit on top of them, forcing the spine out of alignment. The “give” in this product means that these pressure points are gently accommodated, allowing the body to move into a natural position.

Like Sloane and Sons’ traditional sprung bedding, the Twickenham is constructed and manufactured to the highest standards. A good memory foam product will resist wear for a longer period because of the foam's memory which tells it to return to its original shape when not in use. This double, with its 20cm of high quality foam, will provide years of excellent support.

The Twickenham double is rated as medium to firm, and its size is a 135cm x 190cm. A must for restless sleepers – and their partners. Restless sleepers will find that memory-foam enables them to change position and still get the benefit of support, as the bed adapts to their new position. If your long-suffering partner is used to a disturbed night because you toss and turn, they can look forward to much better sleep because the Twickenham has very low motion transfer. That means when one person moves, their movements are not conducted straight across the to the other person, so the sleeping partner is much less aware of the movement and suffers less sleep disturbance.

The same is true if one partner frequently gets out of bed, or has to get up when the other partner is sleeping. Their movements are far less likely to disturb the sleeper, because the movement is confined to the immediate area, rather than being relayed across the bedding.

There’s an additional benefit which is that people may wake often during the night simply to change position because the pressure on one part of their body – such as a knee or hip, has made them uncomfortable. A gently supportive sleeping environment may reduce the amount of night waking for people who are sensitive to pressure points. And lastly – listen to the silence! This bedding doesn’t creak or squeak, so again, a restless sleeper can change position with minimal disturbance to their sleeping partner.

The Twickenham has aloe vera woven into the ticking, to take advantage of the soothing and calming properties of this wonderful plant. It softens the mattress covering, and provides coolness. It’s also very beneficial for anyone who suffers allergies because it is antimicrobial and can calm sensitive skin.

This is also a great choice for those who suffer from allergies. Many people find they start sneezing and rubbing their eyes when they get into a bed that has older, conventional bedding. This is usually the result of house mites, present in their tens of thousands. The Twickenham is a much less friendly environment for mites because the texture doesn’t give them cosy hiding places. So if you are an allergy sufferer, this is definitely the best choice for you.

Sloane and Sons are a traditional family firm, manufacturing in Burton-on-Trent, England. The firm is able to produce premium quality products, such as the Twickenham, at extremely reasonable prices, because they run a very tight ship and make sure that every penny goes into making a better product. That means that unlike lots of internet businesses, there are actually products available in stock and ready for you!

So when you order from Sloane and Sons, they can deliver your order the next day. And to help you unpack they send it to you in a vacuum pack – just place the package on the bed, undo it and pull it into place. Then watch memory-foam do its amazing thing – expanding and settling onto the bed.

Don’t delay. Start giving yourself a better sleep now – order today and by tomorrow night you could be reaping the benefits.

Buying Guide

Buying Guide

At Sloane & Sons we understand the importance of a good mattress. At the most fundamental level, a good mattress equals a good sleep, which equals better health. It might sound obvious but you'd be amazed at just how damaging the health effects are of poor sleep. (Don't take our word for it - here's what the NHS has to say.)

Buying a new mattress is a brilliant step towards a great night's sleep. But which mattress should you buy? We want to make sure you make an informed choice, so do please read on. If you still have questions, we would be very happy to speak to you on the phone or via email - don't hesitate to get in touch.

Our primary message is: don't compromise on quality. Being uncompromising doesn't have to cost the earth though - we keep out prices as reasonable as possible but always keep our standards sky high. With our mattresses lasting up to 10 years so, they are a small price to pay for the comfort, relaxation and better health you'll have as a result 365 days a year.

Sloane & Sons specialise in the two most popular type of bed mattress: memory foam and pocket sprung. We know that many retailers, both online and on the high street, offer thousands of choices but there really is no need. It ends up as confusing rather than helpful. We feel that by having a smaller, more focused range of high quality products, this allows you to choose more easily based on things like size, comfort, firmness, price and type of mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam was developed initially by NASA as a material that would absorb great pressure from astronauts' bodies as they re-entered the earth's atmosphere. Today, this technology makes wonderful mattresses as it can relieve stress and pressure points on your body as you relax into the supple embrace of the memory foam.

  • Memory foam moulds as your body heats up and softens the core around you
  • This allows both support as you lie still but also natural and free movement during sleep
  • Alignments of the spine (horizontally) ensures correct posture
  • Memory foam has hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial properties

Memory foam is ideal for people experiencing joint pain and for people who suffer from allergies. Many people without these issues also enjoy the feeling of warmth, support and comfort that memory foam provides.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

Pocket sprung mattresses are the most common and popular type of mattress in the marketplace. They differ significantly from cheaper alternatives such as bonnel spring or open sprung bed mattresses, which we believe are less comfortable, less supportive and not as good value for money in the long term.

The reason is that pocket sprung mattresses compartmentalise each individual spring in order to evenly distribute the weight and respond to the different pressure points and weights of your body.

  • Ideal if you and your partner differ in height and weight. They will evenly distribute the pressure within the mattress and prevent you from rolling into one another
  • Sloane and Sons mattresses have approximately 1200 individual pocket springs per mattress that are individually housed and this is the benchmark for high level craftsmanship
  • Each 'pocket' works independently from another, to evenly distribute weight
  • This style of mattress allows a good airflow around the body, keeping your comfortable through the night and refreshed in the morning

All Sloane & Sons mattresses have hand-stitched sides and piped edges that underline the quality of design and craftsmanship.

VERY comfortable mattress, I had not used a memory foam mattress before but the firmness I would say is about a 7/10 and I wake up refreshed after getting rid of the mattress my wife and I had for over ten years!
