Established in 1989, Sloane & Sons pride ourselves on delivering mattresses of the highest quality, with customer service to match. At Sloane & Sons, we appreciate the importance of a good night’s sleep to your physical health and emotional well-being; that is why we listened to what customers wanted when developing our range of mattresses. Combining this research, our strong manufacturing history and knowledge of innovative technology, we have designed range of realistically-priced luxury products. To this day, our family-run business, which now supplies superior mattresses internationally, continues to be based in Burton on Trent, England.
With a generous depth of 28cm, this is Sloane & Sons' top-of-the-range single mattress option, measuring 90cm x 190cm. Constructed from no less that than seven layers, the Richmond includes a knitted fabric top (made using Aloe Vera plant extracts) and base, plus additional comfort layers situated above and below the memory foam. This composition makes the Richmond collection the cosiest of our Sloane & Sons options in this range. Rated as a firmness of 7 out of 10, this product would be classed as medium-firm—within the preferred range for most and perfect whether you sleep on your side, back or front.
Sloane & Sons only use memory foam of a higher density. The deluxe 5cm layer of the Richmond is very receptive to body temperature and weight, quickly adapting to fit the contours of the individual’s form. With the viscoelastic moulding perfectly to body shape, the whole of the spine is cushioned, while pressure at the shoulders and hips is relieved. This allows for better alignment of the skeleton and superb orthopaedic support. Engineered to distribute weight more evenly, the Richmond is also well-suited to those who need to spend more time in their bed, reducing the risk of painful pressure sores. In addition to these benefits, the way that the mattress hugs the body gives a feeling of reassurance and security, encouraging peaceful slumber.
Integration of Aloe Vera into the top, knitted layer of the Richmond is yet another indication of Sloane & Sons’ dedication to bringing modern technologies into our products. Aloe vera has long been known for its soothing and balancing effect on the skin. Night-time is when your skin regenerates at its fastest and now it is possible to enjoy the nourishing benefits of this plant extract while you sleep. The antibacterial qualities of Aloe vera help to create a healthy bedroom environment. This plant extract also has hypo-allergenic properties, making it an ideal choice for people who are more sensitive to substances in their surroundings. Working with the body to help maintain a comfortable temperature, the porous nature of the quilted fabric allows any perspiration to easily evaporate into the atmosphere.
This range of mattresses is designed to be single-sided; due to the superior composition, there is no requirement for them to be turned. However, there is a fabric handle that allows for easier maneuvering, should you wish to rotate the product. The tape edging on the Richmond, provides a durable and aesthetically-pleasing finish, while the embroidered Sloane & Sons brand name is just another reminder of the superior quality of the mattress.
Our mattresses are vacuum-packed to ensure the highest level of hygiene on their journey from factory to home. On delivery, it is advisable to move the box to the bedroom before opening: these mattresses are much more portable when sealed and this is particularly true for the luxuriously deep construction of the Richmond. Once in place, position on the base of the bed and remove the plastic wrapper. After about a minute, the product will have expanded to its actual size and depth.

- Buying Guide
At Sloane & Sons we understand the importance of a good mattress. At the most fundamental level, a good mattress equals a good sleep, which equals better health. It might sound obvious but you'd be amazed at just how damaging the health effects are of poor sleep. (Don't take our word for it - here's what the NHS has to say.)
Buying a new mattress is a brilliant step towards a great night's sleep. But which mattress should you buy? We want to make sure you make an informed choice, so do please read on. If you still have questions, we would be very happy to speak to you on the phone or via email - don't hesitate to get in touch.
Our primary message is: don't compromise on quality. Being uncompromising doesn't have to cost the earth though - we keep out prices as reasonable as possible but always keep our standards sky high. With our mattresses lasting up to 10 years so, they are a small price to pay for the comfort, relaxation and better health you'll have as a result 365 days a year.
Sloane & Sons specialise in the two most popular type of bed mattress: memory foam and pocket sprung. We know that many retailers, both online and on the high street, offer thousands of choices but there really is no need. It ends up as confusing rather than helpful. We feel that by having a smaller, more focused range of high quality products, this allows you to choose more easily based on things like size, comfort, firmness, price and type of mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam was developed initially by NASA as a material that would absorb great pressure from astronauts' bodies as they re-entered the earth's atmosphere. Today, this technology makes wonderful mattresses as it can relieve stress and pressure points on your body as you relax into the supple embrace of the memory foam.
- Memory foam moulds as your body heats up and softens the core around you
- This allows both support as you lie still but also natural and free movement during sleep
- Alignments of the spine (horizontally) ensures correct posture
- Memory foam has hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial properties
Memory foam is ideal for people experiencing joint pain and for people who suffer from allergies. Many people without these issues also enjoy the feeling of warmth, support and comfort that memory foam provides.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket sprung mattresses are the most common and popular type of mattress in the marketplace. They differ significantly from cheaper alternatives such as bonnel spring or open sprung bed mattresses, which we believe are less comfortable, less supportive and not as good value for money in the long term.
The reason is that pocket sprung mattresses compartmentalise each individual spring in order to evenly distribute the weight and respond to the different pressure points and weights of your body.
- Ideal if you and your partner differ in height and weight. They will evenly distribute the pressure within the mattress and prevent you from rolling into one another
- Sloane and Sons mattresses have approximately 1200 individual pocket springs per mattress that are individually housed and this is the benchmark for high level craftsmanship
- Each 'pocket' works independently from another, to evenly distribute weight
- This style of mattress allows a good airflow around the body, keeping your comfortable through the night and refreshed in the morning
All Sloane & Sons mattresses have hand-stitched sides and piped edges that underline the quality of design and craftsmanship.
