Many physiotherapists now recommend memory foam for people who have sensitive hips, knees or shoulders, or who have spinal problems and chronic lower back pain. When you lie on a sufficiently deep layer of memory foam – such as the 5cm in this mattress – your hips and shoulders sink slightly into the foam. This cushions and supports them and allows your spine to come into alignment. On a conventional mattress without this “give”, the shape of your hips forces your spine into an unnatural position. The result is poorer sleep and tiredness the next day. We all move many times during the night but memory foam simply adapts to your new position and continues to support your body posture properly.
With memory foam, your weight is distributed much more evenly across the mattress, so of course there is less wear and tear than with a conventional mattress which gradually loses support in those areas that take the heaviest weight. The miraculous ability of memory foam to “forget” the shape of your body when you get up, means that it is all ready to mould to your contours the next time you lie down.
Ideal for couples with differing sleep patterns
The fact is, that while most people move around quite a lot during the night, some of that movement can be due to the fact that the sleeper has become uncomfortable because of the mattress. This causes them to surface from sleep and move to reduce pressure on a part of their body, even though they may not be conscious of it. Because the foam can absorb movements, it reduces the disturbance to each partner which can be caused if one person is a very restless sleeper and moves a lot during the night. Furthermore, the foam is quiet – it doesn’t squeak, groan or rustle as some mattresses do. So that’s an additional bonus when it comes to one partner not disturbing the other. There’s a definite benefit loop here - you are more comfortable, therefore you move less, therefore you sleep better and feel better.
Aloe Vera for comfort and coolness
The memory foam topping is not the only great thing about this mattress. Sloane & Sons mattresses have Aloe Vera embedded into the mattress covering (the “ticking”). This plant has been used for cooling and calming our bodies for thousands of years. It also has antimicrobial properties and may therefore help anyone with allergies or skin sensitivities. Above all, it’s a natural ingredient in the fabric, to help soften it.
Sloane & Sons – traditional manufacturing, new ideasSloane & Sons are traditional, quality manufacturers in Burton-on-Trent, England. They use the latest techniques but make sure that quality comes first. Their luxury mattresses are a combination of high technology and painstaking attention to detail. They are very clear that they won’t bombard their customers with hundreds of different combinations of mattress sizes and types, as is the case with some internet sites. Instead, they hand pick the mattresses that they include in each range. Their philosophy is that they should do the hard work, not the customer. A family firm, they like to help people less fortunate than themselves and during National Bed Month, they raise money for charities helping those who don’t have a home – much less a lovely mattress - to call their own.

- Buying Guide
At Sloane & Sons we understand the importance of a good mattress. At the most fundamental level, a good mattress equals a good sleep, which equals better health. It might sound obvious but you'd be amazed at just how damaging the health effects are of poor sleep. (Don't take our word for it - here's what the NHS has to say.)
Buying a new mattress is a brilliant step towards a great night's sleep. But which mattress should you buy? We want to make sure you make an informed choice, so do please read on. If you still have questions, we would be very happy to speak to you on the phone or via email - don't hesitate to get in touch.
Our primary message is: don't compromise on quality. Being uncompromising doesn't have to cost the earth though - we keep out prices as reasonable as possible but always keep our standards sky high. With our mattresses lasting up to 10 years so, they are a small price to pay for the comfort, relaxation and better health you'll have as a result 365 days a year.
Sloane & Sons specialise in the two most popular type of bed mattress: memory foam and pocket sprung. We know that many retailers, both online and on the high street, offer thousands of choices but there really is no need. It ends up as confusing rather than helpful. We feel that by having a smaller, more focused range of high quality products, this allows you to choose more easily based on things like size, comfort, firmness, price and type of mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam was developed initially by NASA as a material that would absorb great pressure from astronauts' bodies as they re-entered the earth's atmosphere. Today, this technology makes wonderful mattresses as it can relieve stress and pressure points on your body as you relax into the supple embrace of the memory foam.
- Memory foam moulds as your body heats up and softens the core around you
- This allows both support as you lie still but also natural and free movement during sleep
- Alignments of the spine (horizontally) ensures correct posture
- Memory foam has hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial properties
Memory foam is ideal for people experiencing joint pain and for people who suffer from allergies. Many people without these issues also enjoy the feeling of warmth, support and comfort that memory foam provides.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket sprung mattresses are the most common and popular type of mattress in the marketplace. They differ significantly from cheaper alternatives such as bonnel spring or open sprung bed mattresses, which we believe are less comfortable, less supportive and not as good value for money in the long term.
The reason is that pocket sprung mattresses compartmentalise each individual spring in order to evenly distribute the weight and respond to the different pressure points and weights of your body.
- Ideal if you and your partner differ in height and weight. They will evenly distribute the pressure within the mattress and prevent you from rolling into one another
- Sloane and Sons mattresses have approximately 1200 individual pocket springs per mattress that are individually housed and this is the benchmark for high level craftsmanship
- Each 'pocket' works independently from another, to evenly distribute weight
- This style of mattress allows a good airflow around the body, keeping your comfortable through the night and refreshed in the morning
All Sloane & Sons mattresses have hand-stitched sides and piped edges that underline the quality of design and craftsmanship.

2) We have two children 3 and 5 who have developed a habit of jumping in bed with us early in the morning. In our old double this wasn't exactly ideal. With the Super King we have plenty of space for the children.
